I'm writing to urge you to co-sponsor the bi-partisan Markey-Platts fuel economy legislation (H.R. 1506). This one bill provides answers to some of our nation's most serious problems - it reduces our dependence on oil, cuts our global warming pollutants, and saves consumers billions of dollars every year.

Strengthening our fuel economy only makes common sense. The technology exists now to make our cars and trucks go further on a gallon of gas without compromising safety. The benefits - to our security, our environment, and our economy - would be enormous.

The Markey-Platts bill would make our vehicles so much more fuel efficient by 2020 that we would save $19 billion per year at the pump. And it would reduce U.S. emissions by 523 million metric tons of C02 every year.

Fuel economy standards haven't gone up since 1987. Given the current situation in Iraq, and our growing understanding of the disastrous effects climate change is already starting to have, it is irresponsible not to take this opportunity to end twenty years of legislative inaction.

The bi-partisan Markey-Platts bill is simple. It's feasible. And it's proven.

When Congress first passed fuel economy standards in 1975, they made American vehicles 60% more fuel-efficient within ten years - without that law, today we would consume an additional 2.8 million barrels of oil every day. And yet currently, our fuel economy standards are lower than those of China.
