One Energy Bill, Coming Up!

As the Senate and House prepare to wrangle over their different energy bills, they need to hear from as many constituents as possible: America wants the cleanest, strongest energy bill possible.

Don't wait to urge your lawmakers to reduce our reliance on dangerous fossil fuels, save us billions of dollars on energy costs, and help curb global warming.

As a constituent and a League of Conservation Voters supporter, I'm writing to urge you to support a clean, strong energy bill as it moves through conference committee and onto the president's desk.

In the past, forward-looking energy measures have made it through the Senate or House, only to be dismantled in conference negotiations. Now, you and your colleagues have the chance - at last - to finalize a bill that truly responds to America's fastest-growing concerns: our economy, our environment, and the threat of global warming.

An energy plan for the 21st century should take the best from both bills, and keep intact the following provisions:

- Clean electricity. The House bill requires utilities to generate 15% of their power from clean, renewable energy sources like wind and solar by 2020.   
 - Efficient vehicles. The Senate bill increases the average mileage of cars and trucks to 35 miles per gallon by 2020.   
 - Taxes for Big Oil. The House bill reduces some of the giant tax breaks now enjoyed by the oil and gas industries, and instead creates incentives for renewable energy.

We're closer to a strong energy bill than we have been in a decade - which means we cannot waste this opportunity to: reduce our reliance on dangerous fossil fuels, save consumers billions of dollars on electricity and gas, and combat global warming.
