Don't Exploit Tragedy to Gut Environmental Laws
At a time when Congress should be working to solve our long term energy issues, Bush allies on Capitol Hill are trying to dismantle environmental and public health standards -- and exploit national tragedy to provide hand-outs to polluting industries.
Rather than lowering energy costs, this harmful legislation in the House limits the use of cleaner fuels and delays clean-up deadlines for harmful smog -- promising higher industry profits and more air pollution.
Write your Representative TODAY -- the a vote is scheduled for Friday, October 7!
Urge them not to weaken environmental and public health standards.

Subject: Don't Exploit Tragedy to Gut Environmental Laws
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
As a supporter of the League of Conservation Voters, I urge you to oppose H.R. 3893, the Gasoline for America's Security Act of 2005. This harmful legislation would severely weaken clean air protections while failing to increase energy efficiency or security or provide relief to consumers. In fact, this bill appears to be nothing more than an effort to take advantage of high gas prices and the tragedy of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita to gut environmental and public health laws.
Among other harmful provisions, H.R 3893 extends ozone attainment deadlines, which would allow cities with persistent smog problems to miss cleanup deadlines for many years. In addition, H.R. 3893 preempts state and local agencies' authority to protect public health and the environment.
I urge you to vote NO on H.R. 3893 and instead work for a new energy future that reduces our dependence on oil and increases energy efficiency and clean, renewable technologies.
Sincerely,
