Tell Your Senators to Oppose Judge Alito's Nomination

A Supreme Court appointment lasts a lifetime, but the impact the Court has can last generations.

President Bush's nomination to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor poses a grave threat to our environment. Judge Samuel Alito's activist judicial record speaks to his hostility to the laws that govern our clean air, clean water, and public health.

Write your Senators today and urge them to oppose Judge Alito’s lifetime appointment to our nation's highest court.

Subject: Oppose Judge Alito's Nomination

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

The Supreme Court has a profound impact on many aspects of our lives including our environment. That's why as your constituent and a supporter of the League of Conservation Voters, I strongly urge you to oppose the lifetime appointment of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court.

Judge Alito's activist record clearly indicates that he would likely vote to undermine the enforcement of basic federal laws that protect our air, water, and public safety. He has ruled against the basic principle that any citizen can sue for the enforcement of clean water protections -- a decision that was reversed by the Supreme Court. His extremist reading of the Constitution's Commerce Clause -- the basis for most of our country's environmental laws -- has been labeled "legislating" from the bench and flat out "wrong" by even the most conservative lawmakers.

This year alone, the Court will face at least two major cases on federal protection of our health and environment -- but this decision will impact our nation's air, water, and public health for decades to come.

A Supreme Court appointment lasts a lifetime, but the impact the Court has can last generations. I urge you to oppose the appointment of Judge Alito to the Supreme Court.

Sincerely,
