Protect the Arctic Refuge!

Congressional leaders are once again trying to open one of America's most pristine wild places to oil drilling:  The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Over and over, we have successfully defended the Arctic Refuge against relentless -- and desperate -- attacks from those in Congress who will stop at nothing to open this precious wilderness to Big Oil.  They want us to believe that we can drill our way to energy independence.

And once again, we are asking you to write your Representatives.  Let them know that drilling in the Arctic is not the answer!

Sample Letter for Campaign

Subject: H.R. 5429

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a supporter of the League of Conservation Voters, I urge you to vote against H.R. 5429, the misnamed "American-Made Energy and Good Jobs Act" which would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. While drilling proponents argue that rising gas prices are a reason to drill in the Arctic Refuge, drilling there would affect gas prices by only about a penny per gallon even at its peak in 2025.

Instead of despoiling this national treasure in a fruitless attempt to drill our way to energy independence, we should invest in renewable energy and use existing technology to make cars and trucks go further on a gallon of gas. I urge you to vote against this anti-environmental legislation.

Sincerely,
